What is cold therapy?
In recent years, cold body therapy (also know as cryotherapy) has gained serious popularity, because it is linked to numerous health benefits. Some people, including professional athletes, bodybuilders, and celebrities even swear by whole body cryotherapy. Cryotherapy is beneficial in many ways and can be used in a non-medical setting. This way of using the treatment also offers numerous positive effects. For instance, research supports the fact that cryotherapy helps reduce inflammation, swelling, and sore muscles. Therefore, loads of professional athletes, bodybuilders, and celebrities turn to ice baths and other forms of cold therapy to take care of their bodies. Another reason why people try cryotherapy is that it speeds up metabolism and therefore helps with weight loss. Additionally, the therapy is associated with improved sleep quality, more focus, and the reduction of anxiety and depression.

What is the optimum temperature for a Cold Plunge?
The Temperature Range for a Cold Plunge is between 2°C and 16°C. However, you don’t want to set up your water too cold too soon as that can cause cold water shock. When taking an Cold Plunge, aim for a temperature between 10°C and 15°C, as this is the right temperature to invoke the physiological response needed to benefit you physically and mentally. If the water is too cold then you risk an injury from frostbite. If your water is above the 16°C threshold then your body doesn’t e.g. increase noradrenaline production. Consider 10°C to be a sensible target.

How does contrast therapy work?
The key to contrast bath therapy is in the rapid changes produced in your circulatory system when you go from very warm temperature (Sauna) to very cold temperature (Cold Plunge).
When you immerse any part of your body or your entire body in cold water, the capillaries, which are small blood vessels, react to the cold by constricting. This is known as vasoconstriction. When you immerse yourself in warm water, the opposite happens. Your blood vessels open up. This is known as vasodilation, which may be beneficial to you.
