A Place to Reset, Recover, and Connect

Our Story

Fjord was created as a space where wellness fits naturally into everyday life.

A place to pause

Inspired by Nordic traditions of contrast therapy and community, we have created a space to unwind after a busy week, recover after training, or simply take time for yourself.

Whether you come alone or with friends, every visit is an opportunity to reset both body and mind.

People come for different reasons, but many return because Fjord becomes part of their week.

The Meaning Behind Fjord

Our name is inspired by the Scandinavian fjords, cold waterways nestled between towering mountains, known for their raw beauty, stillness, and strength.

Fjord is built on the same idea: a space designed to help people reset in a natural, purposeful way, inspired by nature and supported by science.

Being based at Lourensford made the name feel even more fitting, a subtle nod to our surroundings and a playful connection to LourensFjord, bringing a touch of Nordic wellness culture to the Helderberg.

Benefits

Why People Keep Coming Back

Muscle Recovery

Cold plunges help reduce inflammation and muscle soreness after exercise, improving recovery and performance within 24 hours. Pairing it with sauna therapy boosts circulation, delivering oxygen-rich blood to muscles and easing pain and swelling.

Detoxification

Cold water therapy and sauna use support the body’s natural detox processes. Cold plunging boosts metabolism, while sauna sessions promote sweating—helping flush out toxins, heavy metals, and impurities for improved overall health.

Cell Longevity

Cold plunges and sauna therapy work together to support healthy ageing at a cellular level. Cold exposure may boost cell longevity, reduce inflammation, and improve skin tone by stimulating collagen and balancing oil production. Saunas activate heat shock proteins and enhance collagen and elastin production, promoting skin firmness and a radiant, refreshed complexion.

Mental Health

Cold water immersion triggers a significant boost in mood-enhancing chemicals—raising dopamine by up to 250% and noradrenaline by 530%—while also improving the brain’s response to stress. Sauna sessions complement this by lowering cortisol, the body’s main stress hormone. Together, they promote a calm, uplifted state often described as the “totonou” effect: a deep sense of clarity, balance, and well-being.

Immune Support

Brief cold water exposure (30–90 seconds) combined with regular exercise has been shown to reduce sick days by strengthening the immune response. Consistent sauna use—at least 15 minutes, three times a week—can boost white blood cell production and heat shock proteins, enhancing the body’s ability to fight off illness.

Metabolic Boost

Cold plunges can boost metabolism by up to 350%, stimulating brown fat production and supporting better blood sugar regulation. Regular cold exposure also helps the body adapt to burn more calories over time. Similarly, sauna use promotes thermogenesis—raising the core temperature, which triggers the body to work harder to cool down, increasing calorie burn and supporting metabolic health.
